1] View and take notes on the points that the Professors make about the Creator mentality and the Victim mentality
2] Read these three pages excerpted from Chapter 2 of Dr. Skip Downing's book called On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life: "Adopting a Creator Mindset." While Dr. Downing does not give his specific definition of a Creator or a Victim (captial C and V), he describes their behaviors, so in your notes include what you think his definition of a Creator is (in one sentence) and his definition of a Victim (in one sentence), written in your own words.

Read examples of
Creator and Victim behaviors and language from Prof. David Mirman's teaching blog. Take notes because you will summarize this article later--from your notes only.
2] Write a well developed paragraph about someone you know personally whom you regard to be a Creator. Include in your notes some examples of this person's behaviors that show him or her behaving and speaking as a Creator. You will use your notes to, first, discuss in class in small groups, and later to write a paragraph about this person.

Tuesday, 9/2 1] Discuss the readings by Downing and Mirman about the Creator mindset and the Victim mindset. 2] Rank excuses and reasons, and rewrite Victim language to make it Creator-think.

Homework assignment for Thursday, 9/4: (Note: Always type your assignments, save them multiple ways, and make sure you can access them during class or that you bring them with you.)
1] Draft a paragraph (appx. 150-200 words) describing a specific time when you played the Victim role. SHOW what you did, said, etc. in that situation with specific details, not just generalizations.
2] Draft a separate paragraph describing a Creator whom you know personally. (i.e., you do not personally know Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Dr. M. L. King--but you DO know Creators in your own lives.) SHOW what he or she did, said, etc. that makes you regard that person to be a Creator.
3] Revise your notes from Mirman's blog post into a one-paragraph summary of it.

Thursday, 9/4 Peer review the three paragraphs assigned for today about the Creator mindset and the Victim mindset.

Homework assignment for Tuesday, 9/9: (This is complicated so follow in order.)
1. Use the
Plagiarism Tutorial web page to pre-test what you know already about plagiarism, and have the results sent to me at dollier@tncc.edu.
2. Before reading anything else on that tutorial page, view the videos on plagiarisim and documenting conventions posted in the English 111 class resources box. These 7 videos total about 33 minutes of viewing time. Take notes.
2. After viewing the videos, read pages 2-6 on the Plagiarism Tutorial web page, then
4. Take the post-test (step 7 on the Plagiarism Tutorial page) and write your score in your notes (don't have it sent to me--I will take your word for it. I am not recording that grade; I just want you to see what your level of improvement was.)
5. View the video which is saved in the class resources box about organizing and developing a five-paragraph essay

Week Four

3] Read the following article (linked at bullet 5 below), which was published in an academic journal. It is about how professors and employers may use the Hartman results. Some of the article is going to be pretty difficult to understand, but if you get the gist of it by reading a few sections, you will know the most important material. Therefore, read the following sections carefully:

Homework assignment for Tuesday, 9/30:
Work all of the multiple choice and paragraph editing exercises for your area of expertise from the Norton Handbook exercises. Select the 10 question options rather than the 5 question options, so that you can learn the material thoroughly. Don't skimp on this project, folks, because you need to learn your material well enough to teach it to others. There are no short cuts to that!
Work all the editing lessons (they are called quizzes at this site) in your gourp's area of expertise from the Guide to Grammar and Writing. When you find your editing convention in the GGW index, go to the page and scroll to the bottom to find the lessons. These are interactive quizzes, which, like the Norton exercises, provide immediate feedback and a link to the handbook section whether you answer correctly or incorrectly. It sometimes goeds down for maintenance, so be patient and try at another time if it is not available.

Homework assignment for Thursday, 10/7:
Finish the Errors Analysis assignment we began in class. These will be turned in at the start of class on Thursday. Perfect the Hartman essay to prepare it for me to grade.
Revise the Hartman essay per my grading rubric, and THEN edit it a final time, correcting the errors that you fixed and discusssed from the Creator Mindset essay.

Thursday, 10/9 1] Turn in Errors Analysis/Revision assignments for the Creators Mindset essays; and turn in the Hartman essays to be graded. 2] Two points of extra credit for the first person who can tell the class the historical reason why the commas and periods always go inside a close quote mark in North American publishing and academic writing. (I.e., it is not so in Great Britain.) 3] Work on Editing Experts project. Use the Mozilla browser to look at the way this site (GCF LearnFree.org's Grammar Briefs) presents information about semicolons. I think it is a good model for how to teach a not-so-interesting concept by use of visuals.

Homework assignment for Thursday, 10/14:
Do Phase 1 of the multitasking and time management researched project. Go to the lesson page at the link and do all of the activities in the box called "Phase 1." There are four steps in this first phase of the project: 1] the Wordle freewrite (to jump start your brain), 2] the vocabulary definitions, using context clues and a dictionary to define the words as they are meant in the context of the essay, 3] the paraphrasing activity (answering my questions in your own words), and 4] the article summary.

Week Nine

Tuesday, 10/14 1] Discuss multitasking/impulse control article summaries. 2] Work all the lessons on your group's editing skill in the W. W. Norton editing lessons which accompany their Field Guide to Writing's handbook, and related to your groups skill; also do all the related editing exercises in the Guide to Grammar and Writing site.

1] Prepare paragraphs 1 and 2 (Phases 1 & 2 from the multitasking/time management lesson page) for peer review at the start of class on Tuesday 10/28
2] Work lessons and interactive quizzes on the editing errors that you analyzed in the errors analysis project, from your ptterns of erro on the C & V essay. These are the editing problems you will need to overcome on your subsequent essays. Use our extant resources, W. W. Norton's Exercise Central and The Guide to Grammar and Writing website.
3] Find interactive lessons, quizzes, or exercises, similar to those in the GGW and the Norton site, which will give you more practice in trying to work out your editing errors. Save the URL and a short description of what is at that site because you will share your resources with your class colleagues, and they will share their finds with you. Let's all work together to get rid of these pesky editing errors!

Week Eleven

1] Vote on 11/4!
2] Finish or revise the "Phase 3" summary paragraph.
3] Read steps 10 and 11, and draft a paragraph as instructed in step 11. Don't marry yourself to it because we will do the step 10 discussion in class on Tuesday, and you may want to revise it following that discussion, or perhaps your paragraph will outline things your discussion group will want to include in their paragraphs, too.
4] Place all your Q2 "big rocks" in your time jar first!

  1. Finish revising the Hartman essay, applying all you have learned about good writing in general, editing in particular, and documenting specifically.
  2. Post the revised Hartman essay to your webfolio. I will grade it in that format rather than in paper copy.

Homework assignment:

Pick up your Professional Communication essays on Tuesday or Wednesday if you want to revise and edit them before the final class on Thursday at 11 a.m. They will be in a folder on the door of my office, room 874 of Templin Hall, after 12:15 on Tuesday, 12/9. I returned those papers to several folks last Thursday, but was not able to get the rest of them graded by that time.

Week Sixteen

Thursday, 12/11, 10:45-1:15 1] Collect the web site URLs: First, log in to Wix and "publish" if you have not already done so. Second, log into MyTNCC and go to your email where you will find an invitation link so that we all e in the same environment. Finally, copy and paste your URL next to your name. 2] Finish editing, revising, and uploading returned multitasking/time manageent and professional communication essays. Incoporate these suggestions into your multitasking essay revisions. 3] Finish tweaking the webfolio, which contains all of the elements listed below. 4] Write the course evaluations. 5] Finish the semester in English 111. Adios, amigos! It has been a good experience.
