Type a few paragraphs introducing yourself. In the first and second, tell me about yourself as an English student: Is this your first semester in college, and if not what classes have you taken and where? What do you like about reading and dislike about it? What are your strengths and weaknesses as an academic reader? What do you like to read for fun? What sorts of grades have you achieved based on your reading abilities and habits? What are the most important things you have learned about how to be a good reader?

Answer that same set of questions as they apply to you as a writer and to your writing experiences. If, for instance, you had an ENF 1 or ENF 2 class here at TNCC in the past, you wrote a self-assessment of this sort at the end of the semester, and you can draw on that self assessment to tel me about yourself as a writer.

In a third short paragraph, tell me about you. Do you work? If so where and how many hours? Where did you go to high school or where do you live in this area? What where your high school experiences like? What do you do for fun? What extra-curricular activities were you involved in, in high school and what are your hobbies or preferred activities now? What are you majoring in and where do you plan to go from here? Anything you want to provide about yourself.

The whole thing should be about a page and a half if double spaced. It’s not going to be graded as an essay. I will make notes on what you write and I will assess what writing and editing skills you, personally, need to work on to bring yourself up to a level where you can be successful in college.  So it is important, but it is not going to be formally graded as an essay.
